I am embarrassed to admit this but it’s true.
Once upon a time, I had a call from one of the MBA colleges. Being my first call, I was very excited. I joined the classes, they helped me to prepare well for GD and PI. I prepared for frequently asked questions(FAQ) in the interview and as I attended a couple of Mock Sessions for PI and then refined my answers. I prepared my answers well and went for the interview.
So my GD/PI was scheduled in the afternoon. I reached the venue and then we were allowed to sit inside. After half an hour, I, along with my group was called for GD.
Personally speaking, GD was not really my strong point but I had prepared very well and I performed OK.
Then I was called for an interview. There were three people. 2 Men and 1 women. One man was in his early 30s while other man was in his late 50s. The woman was also a bit older.
I introduced myself to them and they started asking me questions and then suddenly at one point, while I was answering the question, the interviewer stopped me and said
“ Rehearsed answer. Stop!!! That’s a rehearsed answer.”
And I stopped and assertively ( rather guiltily & embarrassingly) said “NO,That was not a rehearsed answer.”
And Then he said “OK. Then keep Going.”
Then I was kind of got stuck but I continued my answer.
Then he started asking me some weird questions for which I couldn’t give him well prepared answers as I would have done otherwise.
He asked me who helped me to prepare these answers, I was disagreeing with him all the time but inside I knew I was caught.
Now one point I want to make here is, this case will not happen every single time but you should be prepared for it.
Especially if you are aiming for top B-schools like IIMs, XLRI, FMS etc.
Intelligent interviewers have very strong Bullshit Meters, they can detect your B.S. in seconds.
The interviewers at such colleges get bored to hear the same boring, rehearsed answers to the same questions every single day. They want to select someone who is really smart, intelligent guy having sense of humor as well as presence of mind.
Don’t bore interviewers with your rehearsed answers.
- It’s not bad to prepare for the answers but if interviewer can sense it if it doesn’t come naturally.
- Don’t mug answers and puke on the interviewer.
- If you activate BS meters of an interviewer, then he is going to screw you up.
If any answer doesn’t suit your personality or you are not comfortable saying it, don’t say it.
Don’t try to look good, don’t creep out the interviewer. He may sense it or he may not sense it depending upon his own level of maturity.
Unfortunately or fortunately, I was selected. I don’t know how and why but I didn’t go there. That’s different point altogether.
But you keep all these points in your mind whenever you are preparing for B-school interview and especially for IIMs.
