This can be one of the most profound sentences I have ever heard.
I have heard this line from someone who is special in my life and when I heard it for the first time, it didn’t really make any sense for me.
And sometime afterwards, it really made sense.
Trying times really separate you from the rest of the crowd.
Trying times really tastes what metal you are made up of.
But generally trying times are really rewarding , they teach you a very valuable lesson at the end of the test which you would otherwise would not have learnt.
I can give you my personal example for this related to cracking MBA entrance. I had to give CAT multiple times, I was pathetic at GD/PI and eventually I developed my skills and I could crack CAT. You can read my entire story here.
There was a time, when I felt like giving up , I felt like my efforts were wasted, I really felt terrible at times. I questioned myself a no of times.
Is it worth it ?
Is it worth giving a shot at CAT again ?
And then I asked myself this question, do I have any other choice ?
I know a lot of people who quit their dream of becoming MBA after they fail to get into B-school of their choice. They settle into any B-school they get into. There is a lot of attrition ratio at the top. The top is filled with a hollow shells of shattered dreams.
This can even happen if you are into your own startup. Startup is a very scary journey. You can’t really predict what’s going to happen next ?
But believe me there is a ton of learning.
There is story of two of my friends who actually showed such a remarkable resiliency, you can read their story here
There are a very few people who take the road very less traveled and these are the people who hit the home run.
There are a lot of people who want to start their own business, but generally more than 80 % of the crowd shut their door down just after an year and remaining 80 % quit in the next year. I can give you a lot of examples. e.g. Amazon broke even after 6 years.
It’s not something that the people who remain there for more than 4-5 years are making huge money, there are many companies just break even after 4-5 years but they still pursue their dreams. It’s not easy to push through when the chips are down. It’s not easy to see the hope even after 5 years of struggle and no profit. It’s very easy to get out of the game but still people with such a strong determination and will of steel can make through it.
And then you can say
“Trying times separate men from boys and women from girls.”
